The decorative information tag includes: The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby and approximately 120,000 are sold at Churchill Downs during the Kentucky Derby Weekend. This quantity takes 7,800 liters of bourbon and 2,250 pounds of locally-grown mint. Mint Juleps are traditionally served in silver or pewter cups and are held only by the bottom and top edges of the cup to allow frost to form on the outside of the cup. Spearmint is the mint of choice for the drink in Kentucky which is crushed or muddled to release essential oils and juices into the mixture.
